The Sharp TV Commercial with Sulu is my favorite commercial right now. Sometimes when I am in the mood to smile, I just play this:
If the player doesn’t work for you, just click this link: Sulu
If you don’t know anything about Harry Potter, don’t bother reading the rest of this, because it won’t make any sense.
I was thinking back about the Potter series and I had a startling realization about the plot of the Goblet of Fire. Remember how Voldermort orchestrated an amazingly complex scheme to make sure that Harry won the contest so he’d touch the cup and be transported to the cemetery. Well here’s the plot problem I have: Why would Voldermort go to all that trouble and risk the fact that Harry might not win the contest? He already had a man on the inside, so why not just tell Moody to hand Harry a freaking portkey?
We know the answer in reality: because then the book would only be 100 pages and not nearly as interesting. But I’m surprised at such a plot hole, and equally surprised that I’ve never noticed it before.
This week I went to L.A. for some customer visits, and I knew they had the potential to be cool, but it turned out to be amazing. Let me recap in the form of bullet points and pictures. CLICK on the picture to see it in full size.
- I got to go on the Warner Brother’s Studios lot and wander around in awe at what history and current pop culture exists behind those walls.
- I had a full tour of the Ellen Show, including the entire backstage area. Then I got to watch the rehearsal from the audience seats, followed by the actual taping of the show from inside the control room. How many people can say that?
- Got a tour of the Late Late show set at CBS Studios, including watching the filing of some skits from the audio control booth.
- Went backstage at American Idol, where I got to see the Jordin Sparks rehearsal.
- Saw the set of the Young and the Restless, and got to meet Eric Braeden, who plays the very famous Victor Newman. It turns out he loves chocolate as much as I do.
- Went on a backstage tour of the Price Is Right, where I got to touch the sacred Showcase Wheel. Then had a nice surprise when I got to walk on stage right before the filming started. Upon walking on stage, the crowd started cheering and screaming, because they thought we were there to announce the show was starting. Instead I just waved.
This is really going to make next week at work look quite boring.
Oh no! I’m going to let the geek side of me show and say that I was very saddened today to hear that Majel Roddenberry died. She was the wife of the creator of the Star Trek series. She had a role on the show and she was the computer voice since the beginning.
We’ll get to hear her one last time though, as she will be the computer voice in the upcoming movie.
I read on the news that Grissom is leaving CSI. Specifically that actor is leaving the show. He’s the main character, so I figured the show will die without him. But then yesterday, they announced his successor: Laurence Fishburne! CSI just gave itself a mighty upgrade.
I finished reading Steven Colbert’s book “I am America…” I have to say, I wasn’t impressed. For those of you that don’t know him, Colbert pretends to be a racist ultra-right-wing Republican, both on his show and in the book. One might call his character an intellectual white-collar Archie Bunker, exposing our stereotypes and worst thoughts in hopes that people realize just how silly they are. The premise seems great. Here are some theories as to why I didn’t like it:
- After 200 pages of pure satire (or even 50 pages), it’s not funny anymore. It’s like sugar: you like it but you’re not going to enjoy eating a bowl of it.
- It’s too real. It’s sort of depressing reading the pages and knowing there are actually people out there that do think that the greatest threat to America right now is illegal immigration or same-sex marriage.
- I only laughed about 6 times…I went in expecting be at least smirking every few sentences. I do however love the section on Religion when he’s ripping into each non-Catholic faith but when he gets to Islam, fear gets the best of him and he says that “[it’s] a great and true religion revealed in the Holy Koran…”
With this post, I am officially adding a “Category” to my journal called “Reviews.” Now you can click on that category and see every post where I review (read: complain about) something. How very exciting for you all!
Someone tell me that wasn’t the last episode of Scrubs that will ever be made? It clearly wasn’t intended to be the last episode. It wasn’t even played in chronological order…episodes played earlier this season clearly are supposed to come after this one. I’m guessing they didn’t have time or budget to finish the series out correctly, so they picked the best episode they could find and slapped it at the end of this season. I blame the writers strike for screwing it up. Such a great show deserves a better ending.
Hmm, I feel like I’m becoming a film/TV critic recently. What will I say is crap next??! Stay tuned.
I’ve done this once before on my journal with Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter, and this time I can try it with TV…I’ll give you the description of a TV series first:
This is a show on the CW network: A young guy named Sam has the thankless task of hunting down demons who have escaped Hell and are running loose on Earth. He finds that he also has odd powers that he can’t control. All this has happened to him because of something that happened with his parents long ago.
What show am I describing?
Well I am actually describing TWO shows on the CW: Supernatural and Reaper. They have almost the same plot, except one is a drama and one is a comedy. It’s like a CW executive said, “Hey, this show is doing well; let’s make it again but this time as a comedy.” It actually worked, because I enjoy both of them.
I finished Harry Potter last night. I am pleased to be done, so I don’t have to worry about spoilers. I haven’t gone to a single news website in weeks. I also have the last 4 editions of Newsweek building up on my desk because I was afraid of what it might say.
Also I have been taking a week of vacation with some people I may or may not know. We’ve possibly been having fun, but that information is confidential. We (and by ‘we’ I mean an unspecified number of us) have doing some tourist stuff in here in Seattle. Here’s a short list (I can not disclose whether this list is complete or not):
Whale watching
Seattle Underground
River Rafting
Kayaking
Restaurants
Snoqualmie Waterfall
